United States federal judge, and a letter from Marshall DeLancey Haywood, a historian and author from Raleigh, North Carolina.
Includes an original copy of the book.

letter to Jordan from his uncle, Joshua Hill, U.S. House of Representatives; from Colonel Robert A. Smith, commander of the
44th Regiment; and a letter to Nancy Jordan from J. J. DuBarry, informing Nancy of the death of her brother, Henry Dillon,
in battle.

The collection consists of correspondence from Franklin M. Fleming to his wife, Lizzie in Marion County, Georgia, while he
served with the 46th Georgia Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters are almost entirely from camps located near
Charleston, South Carolina with some from Camp Cobb at Wilmington, North Carolina. After Fleming's death, his brother D.G.
Fleming with Company G of the 8th Georgia Infantry Regiment, wrote Lizzie from near Richmond, Virginia from March-October
1864.

The collection consists of one bound manuscript compiled by Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. entitled "Letter of General Robert
E. Lee tendering to the President of the Confederate States his resignation of the command of the Army of Northern Virginia:
with explanatory remarks by Charles C. Jones, Jr." Thus, the main body of the manuscript is Jones' transcription of Lee's
famous letter. More importantly, however, the volume has tipped in six prints of Lee, six of Jefferson Davis, two of General
George Meade, and one each of Generals P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, A.P. Hill, T.J. Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston, John
H. Morgan, and J.E.B. Stuart. Views included are two of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Capitol at Richmond, and two unusual
views of Richmond, as well as a folding map. In addition three letters are tipped in: 1. opposite page 4. This letter from
General G. E. Pickett to General Braxton Bragg, dated 26 April 1864, one page, discusses military matters preparatory to the
Battle of the Crater and as such is historically important. 2. opposite page 6. Note signed by Robert E. Lee and addressed
to President Davis informing him the the "Florida Brigade cannot be spared from the army." 3. opposite page 11. Note signed
by Davis and dated 25 August 1863 referring to the above. Apparently both 2 and 3 are endorsements from the same original
piece and separated by Jones for inclusion in this volume. The volume also has clippings of Jones' "A Piece of Secret History"
(Scribner's Magazine, February 1876) and a review of this article (The Cycle, 29 January 1876).

conduct of officers and doctors. Comments on fighting around Fredericksburg and the battlefield, Petersburg, Sherman and the
march through Georgia. Also contains some correspondence from Sallie Coker to Francis Coker and a few business letters.

The major portion of the Barfield Family Collection is three letterbooks filled with the letters of R. Lee Barfield and written
while he was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. The letters were all written to his wife Maggie in Henderson, Georgia.
Many of the letters are in poor condition, but a typescript is included of the legible letters. As he moved through North
Carolina and Virginia, Barfield described such topics as a prison camp; the health of himself and others; the execution of
a deserter; Negro troops; the supplies of food, horses, and arms; his company's skirmishes; and other war news. He continued
to be optimistic that the war would soon be over.
Also in the collection are various legal documents, deeds, promissory notes, accounts, and receipts. Many of these are from
the area of Bibb county, Georgia, and the name of Tillmon Barnett is often mentioned. The Southern Side, a book about Andersonville
prison, is included.
From a later time period are a 1918 Macon News newspaper, a 1921 Athens Banner newspaper, and a 1929 letter to Mrs. M. B.
Medlock of Macon.
